Varsity Reds advance to final with 4-3 win over Dalhousie Tigers
The number one seeded Varsity Reds defeated the number five seed Dalhousie Tigers 4-3 in the first of the men’s soccer Subway AUS Championship semi-final games played today at UPEI.

The Varsity Reds came out strong scoring three goals in the first half of the match.  An early goal just five minutes in from Phillippe Demers set the tone and was followed with goals from Oliver Jones (13:17) and Yousuf Mohammad (42.01).  The Tigers put one past UNB goalkeeper Aaron McMurray just before the end of half time whistle to send the teams to the break: UNB 3, Dal 1.

In the second half of the game the Tigers notched up two more goals to tie the game at the 76th minute mark.

The Varsity Reds continued to play a tough, physical game while playing with just 10 men for almost twenty minutes of the second half following the ejection of fullback Rod Ramsden. George Lawton managed to find the back of the net, on a pass from Jason Bessey, and the game winning goal with less than five minutes left on the clock.

The game was a hard fought physical brand of soccer right from the opening whistle.

“We started out strong but came out the second half a little bit slower,” said Yousuf Mohammad in a post-game interview. “Yes it was very a very physical game.  Dal plays a technical [game] and a strong game but you can’t underestimate our club,” continued Mohammad.

With the win the Varsity Reds advance to the championship final at 2:00 pm Sunday.  This game can be watched live on www.AUStv.ca.  Both teams advancing to the AUS final are guaranteed a berth at the CIS championship at Laval next week.
